    Game setup

    Play Reversi against the computer

Practice at your own pace. There is no clock, you can undo moves, and the computer is always ready for a game. Choose one of 5 levels and whether you play Black or White – Black always moves first.

    The 5 levels

    • Beginner – Still learning, makes mistakes
    • Easy – Knows corners are good
    • Medium – Plays solid moves
    • Hard – Thinks several moves ahead
    • Expert – Our strongest computer

New to the game? Start on Beginner or Easy, and move up a level once you win most of your games.

    Undo, hints and key moments

Undo and up to three hints per game are available. Your results, win streak and rating stay in your browser, and games where you use Undo or hints don't change your rating.

After a game, Key moments shows the moves where you lost the most discs and which move would have been better, so every game teaches you something.

    How the computer plays

Our computer opponent is a classic game-playing program. It looks ahead through possible moves and judges positions with rules written by people. It varies its choices a little, so games don't repeat.

    How to beat the computer

    1. Take the corners, and keep away from the squares next to an empty corner.
    2. Keep your options open. In the middle of the game, try to have more possible moves than the computer.
    3. Don't flip as many discs as you can. Fewer discs early on usually means more moves later.
    4. Near the end, count the empty squares and try to get the last move in each region.
    5. When you are stuck, use a hint, then work out why the suggested move is good.

The strategy guide explains these ideas with board diagrams, and the Daily challenge trains your endgame with a new position every day.
